Travel Guitar Amplifiers for Acoustic Players
SHARE

An acoustic guitar through an electric amp sounds thin and harsh. Acoustic amps are voiced differently, with EQ curves built for the sound of a piezo pickup or a mic, and most include feedback control so you can turn up without the guitar howling. The old version of this guide got this wrong in three of its five picks, recommending amps built for electric guitars under an “acoustic” heading. We’ve fixed that here.

For the wider picture beyond acoustic tone specifically, our complete guide to travel guitar amps covers every travel amp scenario in one place.

If you specifically need battery power for busking rather than acoustic voicing for a gig, our battery-powered amps for busking guide covers that angle instead.

Quick comparison

AmpBest forPowerRuns on
Fishman Loudbox Performer BTPremium acoustic tone for gigging180W bi-ampedMains only
Roland AC-33Best all-rounder30W stereo8xAA or mains
BOSS AC-22LXDuo sets with vocals10W stereo8xAA or mains
Roland CUBE Street MiniLightest, most portable optionStereo, mic + instrumentRechargeable battery

Our verdict: the Roland AC-33 is the one to buy if you want a single acoustic amp that does everything reasonably well, natural chorus-enhanced tone, a mic channel, and the option of battery or mains power. If tone quality matters more than portability and you’re playing proper gigs, the Fishman Loudbox Performer BT is a genuine step up.

Fishman Loudbox Performer BT

Fishman Loudbox acoustic guitar amplifier

Fishman has built acoustic pickups and amps for decades, and the Loudbox Performer BT is where that experience shows. We originally recommended the smaller Loudbox Artist here, but that model’s Amazon UK listing has gone dead, so this is a like-for-like update to the current Loudbox model instead of leaving a broken link. The bi-amplified 1×5 inch plus 1×8 inch tweeter speaker configuration and 180 watts of power put it a clear step above the Artist it replaces, with feedback suppression, dual effects loops and phantom power for a condenser mic, plus Bluetooth for backing tracks.

It’s mains-only and the heaviest amp on this list, so it’s a gigging amp for a fixed venue rather than something you’d carry busking. It’s sold through a third-party marketplace seller on Amazon UK rather than an Amazon-direct buy box, so check the seller and delivery estimate before you order, and treat your local music shop as a backup if you need one quickly.

Roland AC-33

Roland AC-33 acoustic chorus guitar amplifier

The AC-33’s chorus effect is genuinely part of the appeal here, it widens and smooths the sound of an acoustic-electric in a way that feels natural rather than obviously processed. Thirty watts across twin speakers gives you enough headroom for a small venue, and the option to run on batteries or mains means it isn’t tied to a socket.

It’s the amp we’d point most acoustic players towards first, precisely because it doesn’t force a choice between tone quality and portability.

BOSS AC-22LX

BOSS AC-22LX acoustic amplifier

BOSS’s Air Feel technology sets the AC-22LX apart from cheaper acoustic amps, it’s specifically engineered to sound like a mic’d-up cabinet rather than a direct pickup signal, which is exactly the difference acoustic players actually notice. The mic channel includes phantom power for a proper condenser mic, making this the pick for duo singer-guitarist sets.

It’s smaller and lighter than the Roland AC-33, at the cost of a bit less clean headroom.

Roland CUBE Street Mini

Compact combo guitar amplifier with carry handle, similar format to the Roland CUBE Street Mini

If portability matters more than raw tone quality, the CUBE Street Mini is worth a look. It’s built for solo street performance, with a guitar channel and a separate mic channel, Bluetooth for backing tracks, and up to seven hours on its rechargeable battery.

It won’t match the Fishman or the Roland AC-33 for natural acoustic voicing, but for a player who wants one small amp that goes anywhere without a socket, it’s the lightest genuinely usable option here.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a normal electric guitar amp for my acoustic-electric guitar?

You can plug in, but it won’t sound right. Electric amps are voiced for the harmonic content of a magnetic pickup, not the very different frequency range of a piezo pickup or internal mic, so an acoustic-electric through an electric amp tends to sound thin, harsh, or boomy depending on the settings.

What’s the best acoustic amp for a duo with vocals?

The BOSS AC-22LX or Roland AC-33, both have a proper mic channel with phantom power, so you can run a vocal mic alongside your guitar without a separate PA.

Do acoustic amps stop feedback completely?

No amp eliminates feedback entirely, but all four amps here include some form of feedback control or notch filtering that makes it far more manageable than a generic PA speaker at the same volume.

Is a heavier amp always better for acoustic tone?

Not necessarily, but there’s a real trade-off between cabinet size, speaker count and low-end warmth. The Fishman Loudbox Performer BT’s larger cabinet does give it a fuller low end than the more portable Roland CUBE Street Mini, that’s the honest trade-off to make.

How we assessed these

We checked live UK stock, manufacturer specs and pricing on Amazon for every amp here, and specifically corrected three product mismatches from the previous version of this guide, where amps built for electric guitars had been recommended under an acoustic heading.
