Donner HUSH X Live review: the travel guitar with its own amp

A row of electric guitars in a shop, illustrating the kind of solid-body electric feel a travel electric like the HUSH X Live is trying to match

The Donner HUSH-X already does full-scale headless electric guitar for well under half the price of the Traveler Speedster Deluxe. The HUSH X Live takes that same body and neck and adds something nothing else on this site has: a speaker that clips onto the guitar itself, loaded with five amp models and a set of onboard effects, so you can plug in and hear yourself without headphones, an amp, or an interface anywhere near you.

Best for: someone who wants to plug in and hear amp tone in a hotel room or a mate’s spare bedroom with genuinely nothing else to carry. If you’re happy practising through headphones and don’t need a speaker built in, the plain HUSH-X does the same headless, full-scale job for less money.

A row of electric guitars in a shop

The HUSH X Live is built around the same idea as any solid-body electric, real pickups and a proper neck, just with the speaker and amp built into the travel kit instead of left at home.

What actually makes it different: a speaker you clip on and plug in

Pack the HUSH X Live down and it’s the same headless idea as the plain HUSH-X: a solid mahogany body with no headstock, tuning hardware moved to the bridge end, and two lightweight metal wings that bolt onto the sides to give it a full-scale playing feel. What’s new is a third module, a small speaker unit that clips into the space where a normal guitar’s controls would sit.

That speaker isn’t just an amplifier for the raw pickup signal. Donner’s built in five amp models, a Marshall JCM-800 voicing, a Mesa/Boogie-style high-gain setting, a Fender Twin clean tone, a Roland Jazz Chorus, and a Vox AC30, plus a set of onboard effects: delay with tap-tempo, reverb, modulation and a noise gate. You switch between them with small knobs on the underside of the horn, and there’s Bluetooth built in too, so you can stream backing tracks or a lesson from your phone straight through the same speaker while you play along.

One thing worth knowing before you buy: the speaker doesn’t just click into place and start working. It needs a short cable connecting it to the guitar body, which Donner includes in the box, but it’s an extra step, not a single snap-together action the marketing photos might suggest.

The neck, body and hardware

The body is solid mahogany, and the neck is a genuine neck-through design, a seven-piece laminate of mahogany strips with two thin maple strips running through it, the kind of construction more usually seen on guitars well above this price. That’s not just a spec-sheet detail, a neck-through build resists the warping and tuning drift that a bolt-on neck can develop over time in a case that gets thrown around airports.

Scale length is a full 25.5in, the same as most Fender electrics, so the string tension and fret spacing feel like a standard guitar rather than a shrunk-down compromise. The fingerboard is HPL, high-pressure laminate rather than real wood, which shrugs off the temperature and humidity swings of overhead lockers and hotel rooms better than rosewood or ebony would, though it has a noticeably smoother, more synthetic feel under the fingers than a traditional board. There’s a bone nut and 21 frets, and headless tuning at the bridge end via Donner’s own fixed six-saddle system.

Close-up of a headless electric guitar neck and bridge

Headless guitars move the tuning hardware down to the bridge, which is where the HUSH X Live saves its length and lets the whole thing pack down smaller than a standard-headstock electric.

Pickups are Donner’s own Alnico V humbucker at the bridge and an Alnico V single coil at the neck, wired for real electric guitar tone through a proper amp or interface, not just through the built-in speaker. The whole thing weighs in at 2kg, and it’s sold in Black or White, both confirmed live on Amazon UK at the same price.

The genuine downside: the speaker is the weakest part of the kit

Guitar World’s own hands-on review is blunt about this, and it’s worth repeating rather than glossing over: through the built-in speaker, tone comes across boxy and a bit narrow, with a congested midrange that gets worse the more gain you dial in. It’s fine for late-night noodling or working out a chord progression, but it’s not going to show off what the pickups can actually do. Plug into a real amp or an interface instead and the reviewer found the tone opened up properly, which matches what you’d expect from a 5-watt module doing double duty as a portable speaker.

The same review flagged two smaller quirks worth knowing before you buy. The neck’s satin finish is fast and slick, close to plasticky, which some players will love for lead playing and others will find takes a while to get used to if they’re coming from a more traditional wood feel. And the tap-tempo button for the delay effect sits on the back of the guitar rather than the front, an odd placement that makes adjusting tempo mid-song more awkward than it should be.

None of this is a dealbreaker. The reviewer’s own verdict was that it’s a genuinely well-made, fun instrument that goes beyond a novelty, not a guitar-shaped gimmick, just one where the built-in speaker is a convenience feature rather than the main event.

If you already own headphones you’re happy practising through, the plain HUSH-X gets you the same headless, full-scale feel for well under half the price. The HUSH X Live earns its higher price specifically for the times headphones aren’t practical, playing for someone else in the room, or somewhere you want actual sound coming from the instrument without digging out any other gear.

FAQ

Is the HUSH X Live the same as the HUSH X Pro?

No, and the names are close enough to cause real confusion. The HUSH X Pro is a separate Donner model built around onboard preset combinations and tone simulations with no built-in speaker. The HUSH X Live is the one with the clip-on speaker module and five amp models described in this review. Check the exact listing title before buying, since both sit in a similar price band.

Does the speaker work with other guitars?

Yes, per Donner’s own listing. The speaker module isn’t locked to the HUSH X Live body, it can be used with other electric guitars, and the guitar itself also outputs to external speakers or amps in the normal way through its standard jack.

Do I need special strings for a headless guitar like this?

No. Like the plain HUSH-X, it takes regular strings rather than a special headless-only set, anchored at the bridge end rather than the headstock.

Does it come with a case?

Yes, a gig bag is included, along with the speaker module, connecting cable and the usual small accessories, per the Amazon UK listing.

How long does the built-in speaker run on battery?

Donner doesn’t publish an exact figure for the HUSH X Live specifically. Check the current listing’s product information before buying if battery life for a full practice session matters to you.

Will it fit as hand luggage on a flight?

A full-scale headless electric like this one is a tighter fit for cabin baggage than a genuinely compact travel guitar, and no airline guarantees cabin space for any guitar regardless of size. Check our guide to flying with a guitar in the UK before booking anything you’re relying on it fitting into, and see our guide to travel cases for electric guitars if you’re checking it into the hold instead.

The bottom line

The Donner HUSH X Live is the guitar to buy if you specifically want to plug in and hear yourself somewhere with no amp, no headphones and no interface to hand, whether that’s a hotel room, a friend’s house or a rehearsal space you’ve just arrived at. Buy it for the built-in speaker and Bluetooth backing tracks. Don’t buy it expecting that speaker to sound like a real amp, Guitar World’s own testing found it boxy under gain, and you’ll get a genuinely better sound plugging into a proper amp or an interface instead.
